One of the most popular and obvious GPU applications in the area of image processing is image filtering. This paper presents a fast implementation of 2D convolution over a monochrome image, which can also be applied over any matrix of floats. As a bonus, this paper discusses a sticky point usually left out of any discussion in the field of GPU-based image processing – how do you deal with convolution boundaries to avoid multiple boundary checks?
